This is a blog by Faye Oliver following the progress of THE SHATILA STREET ART PROJECT 2012

July 31st sees the arrival in North Tyneside of a group of 10 children and 3 teachers to start the 2012 Shatila Street Art Project. The project will span Shatila Camp and North Tyneside, and be led by young North Tynesiders Faye Oliver and Anthony Downie, both experienced exponents and teachers of Street Art. On the visit to North Tyneside the children will be having sketching sessions in a Whitley Bay shop in the town centre and learning spray painting techniques at Linskill Centre with the 2 street artists. They will also contribute to the international Graffiti Wall at the Sage, Gateshead.

The children will present their traditional Dabke dance in the town centres of North Shields on Thursday 2nd August and Wallsend on Friday 3rd August.

The public will have access to their work at Tynemouth Metro Station on Tuesday 9th August

Later in the year, two young North Tyneside street artists, Faye Oliver and Anthony Downie – both professional practitioners with experience of working with children – will engage with children from Haifa School and other youngsters who live on the camp to create wall murals on agreed spaces in Shatila Camp where the breeze block walls are drab and grey. The children will work at sketching designs and ideas and learn how to successfully transfer them to walls. Approx 50 children will be involved. They will benefit from learning new skills and the residents of the camp will have a brighter environment. The Street Art Project will bring some colour into the place and create artwork that will brighten up surroundings with vibrant murals.
